Actually, with Gaelen saying those lines to him, it makes it sound more like he was working with the Shadow Thieves at some point.
He was. The head SThief guarding the exit from Jon's dungeon says "Irenicus shall learn what it is to betray the Shadow Thieves!"

I think all the clips are there.  I could be wrong.

Erm, I believe that it's a general consensus that it's Shadow Thieves, that the Gaelen talking to Irenicus is the same you meet in the Slums.  Also, I heard that the .wav files that were supposed to be played with this cutscene don't exist; please correct me if I'm wrong about that.  If it IS true, than it could be annoying, because obviously there are three choices: re-insert the dialogue, leave out ALL sound (boring), redo ALL the voices from scratch (time-consuming and you'd have to find new voices for Imoen, Irenicus, Shadow Thieves, Gaelen, and Cowlies), just put in all the files you can find and let the rest be silent (choppy).  As you can see none of the options are really that wonderful.  Oh, and, all this trouble for a few extra lines that really don't do TOO much to improve your gaming experience?  Not really worth it if you ask me.  Although, I do find it illuminating to see that this is the reason Gaelen finds out about my predicament so soon; still it's not techically neccessary, as evidenced by the fact that they DID cut out this bit.

what bona fide sources could there possibly be other than explicit content found buried in the game {which could obviously be directly referenced} or interviews/pipeline with gaider (any other 'original crew' get their brain picked for public consumption?)

I've seen much debate as to whether it was the Shadow Thieves, vampires, dopplegangers, rakshasas, or the Umar Hills Chickens. I think the conclusion is that nobody really seems to know.

Wasn't it supposed to be the Shadow Thieves who captured the PC and co. between BG1 and 2?

IIRC Aran tells you about the Shadow Thieves' and Irenicus' ties during your encounters with him. No need for him to be anything beyond that. The ST set him up with CI and basic paperwork in Athkatla. I just meant it doesn't add anything we did not already know or anything that changes gameplay.

Ah, I thought it was a Cowled Wizard saying that. Thanks, Kish.

[SOUND IRENIC02] You dare attack me here?! Do you even know whom you face?!
[SOUND GAELEN36] We know of your treachery, Irenicus! Where have you taken our brethren?!
[SOUND IRENIC07] You know nothing of me! You know nothing of what I must do! You will suffer! You will all suffer!
[SOUND GAELEN37] Men! Kill him!

Almost makes it sound like Irenicus was a former Cowlie, doesn't it? Makes sense, since there wasn't a point to this cutscene before Bioware came up with the Spellhold idea...

That's basically what the thread concluded. There was also discussion that Gaelan might have been meant to stick around and direct the PC to the slums from there, which would explain why you *have* to visit the slums first..
