I've always been a fan of magical items that add drawbacks to their benefits. Kazgaroth's Claw, etc. It forces the player to think more about their choice of items and situations to use them in.
"Well, I *could* use this bulky Dwarven Plate that provides a -5 AC, but I have to accept Slow upon my character. Hmmmm..."
IMHO, not knowing about a potential drawback is where the detracting WTH?!? factor appears. Now one can't just use Sanchu with impunity. It also set's up Kuroisan's Fire Shield casting older brother who's been searching for him - LOL.
