Stuttering using eSeries
« on: March 10, 2009, 08:20:49 AM »
Iv been playing a small part of Tutu again, before i just used uScript, but that doesnt seem to be working fully in Tutu.

So iv been trying to use this eSeries of Cirerreks.

Sounds like a good set of scripts. But iv been having a couple of problems with them.

Whenever i use any of the eSeries scripts with any character in my party i get stuttering. It goes away when i revert back to a different AI Script.

Game run fine without them, but id rather not have to micro manage EVERY action.

Any help or suggestions?
Meh.

Hello, welcome to PPG.

I never played with eSeries, but there's a forum for eSeries(and other scripts) at forums.gibberlings3.net. The forum is not very active, but chances are you will get help there.

What are your PC specs?
If you've got a slower/older PC you will get stuttering.

I have one computer running Windows 98SE with an Intel Celeron 800mhz processor and 512mb ram and E-Series causes stuttering.
I have another computer running Windows XP with a 2.4ghz processor and 512mb ram and E-Series causes no stuttering.

So somewhere between the two is the point where the amount of processing needed to examine and execute the scripts goes from smooth flowing to a stutter. I am not sure at what point that is, but perhaps we could determine that if enough people were willing to share their system specs and whether or not e-series works for them.

There are things that can be done to help reduce the stuttering, but I'm not really sure what those are.  I took the easier route and migrated the games to the better machine once my wife decided that she needed a laptop instead of a desktop...

Its not specs, it runs fine without the scripts, but here are my specs anyway.

I got a 3.06 ghz single core CPU and 2gb of ram, and im using an Nvidia GeForce 8400.

So i dont think its spec related. Or if it is something else is doing it, and eSeries is just the straw that breaks the donkeys back so to speak. The last program that just tips it over.

definitely not specs then. E-series should be no problem on that machine...

What other mods are installed?  Do you have any other script intensive mods installed? Do you have a clean second copy of the game that you could try running with just E-series?

You could start with a clean install and put E-series on there first, try it and see if it stutters by itself. If it doesn't slowly add one mod at a time until E-series begins to stutter. That might point you to another possible mod that causes the stuttering.  But I'm just grasping at straws here.

Ill make a new install of Tutu tonight and try just eSeries.

Otherwise i dont think i have any script intensive mods.

EDIT: Alright i just made a vanilla install of Tutu and installed eSeries,
// Log of Currently Installed WeiDU Mods
// The top of the file is the 'oldest' mod
// ~TP2_File~ #language_number #component_number // [Subcomponent Name -> ] Component Name
~SETUP-ESERIES.TP2~ #0 #0 // eSeries v1.8

Still stutters... I made a new character and went to the "Group Fighting Training" and set eSeries scripts to all players and still somehow managed to get stuttering...

I guess the question now is:
Does e-series work for you on a vanilla install of BG2 with/without TOB?

If it does then perhaps there is something in the translation to TuTu that is lending itself to help cause this problem. However, I've not had any issues with e-series in EasyTutu. I can not attest to TuTu as I do not have the non-english version of the game.

Should have asked earlier are you using the older TuTu for non-english games or EasyTutu for english games?  Not sure if it would cause a difference but who knows.

I was using EasyTutu, and i just tried it on my BG2 install, although it had a few mods on it.

It still stuttered so i have no idea.

I think my computer just doesnt like eSeries.

Does it only happen during battles or all the time?

It stuttered on my old & slow PC all the time.  Some really heavy fights (especially with a lot of spell casters) might occasionally cause it to stutter on my almost as old but faster PC.

Have you tried turning off things like antivirus & spyware protection that may be running in the background and taking up some of your computer's RAM while you play the game?  Who knows, it just might smooth things out for you...

Have you defraged your hard drive(s) recently? You'd be surprised at how many problems go away with a good defrag.

Alright, after awhile trying things, i think it may be a problem with my CPU. The thing just seems to be running badly.

The stuttering happens any time the screen is close to any companion.

The stuttering DOESNT happen if i use the PureF or eTheif, im guessing because they are smaller scripts.
Meh.

I was having the same issue while using e-series v1.8, I tried everything and then went into the baldurconfig app on a whim and decided to lower the paths for the ai to search whilst moving and voilá, problem solved. I had it set to an absurd amount like 400000.

The game documentation itself suggests increasing the path finding value to prevent getting stuck when moving.  Perhaps then, the increased processor usage for path calculating is taking away from the script processing when walking.  Lowering as you did, should improve the script's processing but you run the risk of getting stuck if you've lowered too much.   Play around with it and find the highest path finding # you can for the script to run smoothly without stutter.   Then let the rest know of your discoveries  ^^

Good job on finding this out  ;D
