Shame about this mod
« on: January 28, 2009, 04:54:26 AM »
Some of the bugs in this mod are so ridiculously easy to fix, why the fuck hasn't anyone done it yet? I haven't played through all the content but for example, after encountering 2 bugs with Minsc's quest, pin-pointing the cause and fixing them took me 2-3 hours. I'm talking about the unkillable trolls (for which there's now a hotfix but players who download the mod will still encounter it and experience irritation before discovering the fix) and the other, more obscure one, whereby Minsc's damage and Thac0 become way too high after finishing the quest. The cause of this bug is wwboo.spl which doesn't reset Minsc's exceptional strength modifier to 0 after his strength rises to 19 (he ends up with 19 PLUS the bonus from his /93 exceptional strength modifier).

I can tell you are competent. If you give us a hand, we'll fix it: me or jcompton will update the files for you.

(Really, the problem is, we just need someone who understands - the authors of UB more or less despaired or disappeared, and I'm more of an "dialogue" modder).

If it's not too difficult for you, maybe you'll e-mail the fixed component(s) to jcompton,
at pocketplane.net?

(Jason, if you need my assistance in this, just ask. Note that I'm no Nythrun, no SimDing0, no DavidW and no CamDawg, though).

I think that helpful would be an understatement...

It would be great!

This mod has languished for far too many months in fact!

There is a modified .tp2 by Nythrun available in the Workroom section which can be used as starting point, I guess... (topic is TP2, author: Icelus)

Oh! Oh, oh, yes, yes, very helpful.

Okay, from what I see, fixes are mostly in these two topics:
Tp2 fixes by Nythrun
patch to kill unkillable trolls that probably doesn't work because I heard it didn't

And this topic has all the latest/most important bug reports, including yours:
Spring Cleaning topic(hey, it's spring again soon!)

And what Enkidu said.

I can help with uploading this stuff(or jcompton wakes up, reads this topic in horror and gives you access -- or bans us all; it depends). Besides that, I don't know if PM'ing Icelus and Nythrun helps? (Nythrun is, like, really absent, but she probably could send a file or two; and Icelus certainly knows something(and is hiding it! :) Kidding, sorry.).)

Check the BiG fixpack at SHS. Always check that. they fix problems in your mod, add the diff to the package, and 'forget' to notify you.

An update for this would be great and hugely appreciated - I usually skip installing the Minsc/Boo quest at the moment, which is a shame. It would be nice to remove the whole Druid Grove detour if possible due to its potential for plot buggery, but failing that incorporating the unkillable trolls fix would be a very good second.

Then all we need is erebusant's Ascension update and SimDing0's Quest Pack update and the world will be a warmer, nicer place.  :)

I'd second removing the druid grove detour, i have the file for UB V14 with the non-druid grove minsc quest, and i think the minsc thac0 issues are still present but the quest is a lot better - someone else already noied, in one the topics linked above most likely, that you might be sent to the grove BEFORE having gone yourself which can cause further problems to that little trademeet sidequest type thing (which is really not that little at all) so i'm more like 16thing the removal than seconding it, at least.

Revert that quest to v14 and fix anything remaining, but obviously use v17 for other stuff as a basis.

Anyways, you guys know best i suppose, good luck.

I'm not a modder, I'm a player. I barely know anything about Weidu (just enough to get me through the night and modify tp2s for convenience).

I checked the Big world fp and from what I can gather reading the code, it only fixes 2 issues. One I don't know about and the other with unkillable trolls that I know all too well. But it doesn't fix it properly. However, Simdingo's fix DOES seem to fix it because it removes 3 lines that order the trolls to attack (this behavior overrides their normal one of falling down when sufficiently dehitpointified). To fix the issue at it's core one need only remove those 3 lines from \UnfinishedBusiness-v17\ub\Minsc\Appends\arwwbo.baf

      ActionOverride("wwtrol1",Attack("Minsc"))
      ActionOverride("wwtrol2",Attack(Player1))
      ActionOverride("wwtrol3",Attack(Player1))

As for Minsc's dmg/thaco being too high just use your NI or DLTCEP to add an effect #97 to \UnfinishedBusiness-v17\ub\Minsc\Items\wwboo.spl and set the value to 0.

Those are the issues I found during my playthrough. There are more as I see from reading this forum but I refuse to believe that not a single person found the cause and fixed these bugs for themselves. So I can't help but wonder;  is this mod still supported at all?

I'm happy to do a recode if the relevant Powers-That-Be don't mind. I make no promises about timescale. (Next week? Next month?)

I don't think I can reasonably remove the druid grove aspect of the Minsc/Boo quest since I think it would violate original-developer intent. What I can do is make it optional (so that the component offers the choice of the two versions of the quest).

Lately, JC has been a vocal fan of not being an hypocrite when it comes to modding other people's mods.

David,

There is a quote from Andyr that "Cliffette is removing the part involving going to the Druid Grove for the next version." (which I guess never happened):

http://forums.pocketplane.net/index.php/topic,18914.msg294752.html#msg294752

Not sure that quite constitutes developer intent, but is hopefully sufficient to support your "two options" proposal.

And I totally agree with him. But there is a world of difference between modding other people's mods and editing other people's mods. I'd have no qualms at all about releasing a mod with a "revert UB Minsc" component.

But it would probably be better for all concerned if I could just sell the maintenance of this mod off to someone.

Some months ago, I announced in the forum that I was going to translate UB for BG2.
Finally, I finished my translation from english into italian! :D Ilot, Mother Anorexia and the bigg helped me too.
So, to whom could I give it?

'Forget' is a hard word. I'm the only person by the BWP who do the public work and it is not easy to handle all the things in all the forums in time. Sorry.  :-\ But many peoples helps me and so I've heard from them of the new upcoming version of UB. :)

It isn't, actually. The engine allows for this sort of thing automatically. (Open up, say, a potion of fire giant strength in an editor; you'll see that it too doesn't modify ex. strength, and yet it doesn't give the problematic result.)

The actual reason (I think) is a problem in Elle's dialog: she sometimes applies wwboo.spl twice, giving a stacking THAC0 bonus.

Unless I'm totally confused, wwgen.d isn't actually compiled, so I don't think you/we need to fix this.

It appears to be a fragment of a section of the Kidnapping of Boo that Cliffette didn't fully implement - there's some reason to think the weird excursion to the troll mound is actually a remnant of this extra content. For this reason (and given the general comments in this thread) I think I'll bow to popular demand and revert.

Also, it looks as if the new lines in the German translation translate either lines we don't actually use, or lines that we could strip directly out of dialog.tlk... I'll implement that, should help with translations more generally.
