New start area in SoA
« on: January 29, 2005, 12:14:20 PM »
I hope that posting 3 questions at once doesn't break the rules. So:

1) Is there a direct way to make a new SoA game start in an area other than AR0602 (say, ToB isn't installed)?
I've tried to simply change STARTARE.2DA and STARTPOS.2DA files, but it crashes the game.
An obvious solution is to EXTEND_TOP of the area script AR0602, but people tend to have several
mods installed at once, so this may cause problems.

2) There's an oddity in the original AR0602 script. The third block looks like
  IF
    Global ("IrenTeleport","GLOBAL",2)
 THEN
    RESPONSE #100
      SetGlobal ("IrenTeleport","GLOBAL",1)
        blah blah blah
 END
But where the hell is "IrenTeleport" assigned 2? I've failed to find out.

3) Some romance opportunities allowed by BioWare are idiotic, such as Jaheira romancing a hobbit.
But who am I to judge, though?
Anyway, I have a question about Charname's races available. Methinks as if it is possible to add more
to the 7 originally set (if so, Tiefling is the first obvious race) (not that I intend to do it, but I'd like to
take it into account in a mod I'm working on, where an NPC's reactions strongly depend on
Charname's race). So, if I am not mistaken and the list of Charname's races can really be extended,
can anybody give me a hint how far can it go?

I guess it would be more idiotic and OOC for an elf to romance a half-breed than for Jaheira to fall for a halfling, but it's your call.

Edit: sorry a freudian slip with halflings and hobbits. ;)

I think people have been able to do this with SoA. Never tried...

To change the SoA starting area, you have to add it to mastarea.2da too.

The ToB starting area is hardcoded. It can be changed in the EXE, however.

To Mr. Jester:
But Tolkien's elves romance humans, what's wrong about half-elves then?

I have to agree. However, they have much in common, like halflings=hobbits. And it seems to me,
that elves in FR speak the same language as in ME (i.e. Sindarine; I'm not sure, though).
Anyway, humans, elves, and half-elves are compatible bodily, at least. Though... I hear there are
guys in RW who romance dogs, pigs, sheep, etc. So, you never know...

I'm not sure that anything you do with a sheep can really be described as "romance".

Elves are quite racist in FR according to the books (Not the novels of which I haven't read any, but the guidebooks). A half-elf tarnishes the pure blood, hence they look down on them. We know how it feels to be tainted, so it might not be a problem for an elf PC, but other elves consider half-elves as inferior. Not that they would warm up much to humans, dwarves or halflings either.

Silly me, I should have certainly typed the word as "romance", but I had hoped it was clear

quote /Elves are quite racist in FR according to the books/ end quote
Sure enough, but we should consider here Charname's attitude, who was raised among humans
(as you have stated yourself), hence hardly inherits such arrogance towards half-elves

Oh, I've just tried to start a new game with appropriate changes in the three files:
MASTAREA.2DA, STARTARE.2DA, and STARTPOS.2DA, and it works, and I am so happy!
By Tempus, I should have posted the question 6 months ago. Thank you again
